K-12 Education in Rossland VSS planning meeting

K-12 Education in Rossland/Visions for Small Schools (VSS) meeting,  Monday, Nov 24th 7 PM, RSS Library

Well, that was a very exciting meeting last Thursday. Once again, we thank Superintendent Jean Borsa for her open-minded, inclusive report that focuses on the future. The SD#20 Board is requesting community input with regard to our schools and the future of public education in Rossland. The deadline for such submissions is MARCH 2009.

The Rossland organization known as Visions for Small Schools (VSS) is a non-profit society formed in 2003, when the Liberal Govt. changed the education funding budget and every school district started to lose schools. VSS can be a vehicle for our community to use as we come together over this issue. We need everyone's input as we start to prepare a submission. Our goal is create a plan which will be embraced by Rosslanders and that we can present to the Board of Trustees before March 2009.

On Monday, we will be inviting those interested in joining the VSS, to consider membership and/or help us out with this project. Your opinion is valued and essential.

The board will be looking for a plan that fits within the SD20 budget, that will be fair to the rest of the district and that will satisfy our needs in Rosslanders for years to come. Our plan will need to be a unified vision.

With that in mind, these are things we will be considering over the next few months:

1) There has been a strong suggestion that a K-12 configuration is the preferred option.What are some examples we can look at where this configuration is running successfully.

2) Renovation or replacement and which school? What are the options.

3) What is the Neighbourhood of Learning concept (in the Planning for the Future doc.) and can we use it in our master plan? If so, how?

On Monday night we will explain what/who the VSS society is, why it was formed and find new leaders and members for VSS.
